History of the National Hockey League The National Hockey League or NHL was founded in 1917. The beginning of the NHL (National Hockey League) was the end of the NHA (National Hockey Association). Tommy Gorman started the NHL. Gorman was not only the founder, but he was the owner of four teams. As the years have passed, more and more teams have joined
the NHL. Now there are 32 teams. Some of the first teams were the Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadians, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. Minnesota Wild and Columbus Blue Jackets were the last two teams added in 2000. |
NHL in 2013 The big story in the NHL for 2013 is the Chicago Blackhawks. They have 18 wins and three overtime losses, but have not lost any games in regulation. On the other side, my Washington Capitals only have 7 wins this season and have the second to worst record in the league only in front of the Columbus Blue Jackets with just five wins.
Steven Stamkos from Tampa Bay Lightning and Sidney Crosby from Pittsburgh Penguins are leading the league with 31 points each. However, Steven Stamkos is also leading the league with 14 goals. Currently, the top goalie in the NHL is Corey Crawford from the Chicago Blackhawks with a 1.46 goal against average this year. Diagram of an NHL Rink |
